Rambling story time: I got four kicker DSC650 speakers from a neighbor the other week and they have been a slight pain. The fronts worked perfectly fine and were basically plug and play. I broke two trim pieces but oh well. The rear on the other hand, oh boy.
The kickers are 6.5” and the stocks are about 4”. Everything on the internet told me this would not work without extensive modifications but you can’t believe everything on the internet right? Sure.
The kickers don’t fit in the speaker housing so it looks like I need a spacer. Bought a cutting board and went to town (cutting board is cheap thick plastic).
First iteration didn’t quite work but that’s why I bought a bigger cutting board and didn’t do both at once. I didn’t take many photos so bear with me here. I recut just normal circles and the speakers fit in the housing! Hooray! But oh no, I’m covering mounting screws. And how do I mount the spacer to the housing itself after getting it attached to the door?
I figured out a redneck engineering way to make this work. Screw the housing in to the door like normal, plastic hangar strap around the spacer and into the normal speaker mounting holes, window insulation foam to fill space/sound deadening, and finally the speakers.
Holy. Shit. It works! I’m a genius now if only the door card fits back over it... Yeah, no. Of course it doesn’t. Sticks too far out at that bottom corner that has zero clearance for these shenanigans.
Admitting defeat (for now?) I continued to drink more beer.
But that wasn’t enough, in the corner was a snowboard with a busted tail that needing fixing.
So I devised a plan and just cut that tail right off to create a swallowtail.
I still need to sand and epoxy the hell out of it but I honk it goes without saying , this project went much better. And faster.

Cut a whole in the door card for the speaker to stick out of?

Thought about it. I don’t want to completely mess up my door cards right now. I need to get some other trim parts so if I can find other door cards for cheap in a part out I think I just might
